Crepey, Wrinkled, Aging Skin: Why You Have It and What To Do (Part-2)

Part Two: Collagen, Vitamin C and a Beauty Drink!

What is collagen? Collagen is the “glue” that holds you together…the most abundant protein in your body. Collagen makes up 75% of the top layer of your skin. It forms a network of fibers that support your skin, bones, organs and cartilage. Babies have a lot of collagen, hence their radiant skin. Healthy skin is collagen rich….so read on. Scientists have identified at least 16 types of collagen. Type 1 collagen is actually stronger than steel!!!(1)

You produce collagen until about age 40, when collagen production declines. (2)By 60, your collagen levels dramatically drop…. leading to wrinkles, weak bones, weak artery walls and an overall weakened body.(3)Many skin procedures attempt to increase collagen (lasers, dermarollers,etc.).

Until recently, no one was really sure whether or not collagen supplements would improve your skin. In a large double blind study, published in 2014, hydrolyzed collagen measurably improved the skin in 8 weeks. This finding supported previous smaller studies. Other studies have shown collagen’s effectiveness in relieving joint pain and decreasing appetite. It has been used for years to help heal burns.(3)

There is a catch! Collagen takes patience because it takes time to see results…In some people it can take up to 6 months to see a difference. But it is worth it inside and out! After all, collagen affects the skin all over your body….and the organs inside your body.(3)

After researching collagen, I noticed that some manufacturers isolate collagen types, thought to be effective for skin (Type 1&3). I opted to take a full spectrum hydrolyzed collagen supplement. After all, how can you be sure which types your body needs? Old fashioned gelatin is basically the same as hydrolyzed collagen, but processed differently.(It may be harder on your stomach.) Great Lakes makes a great natural gelatin. Knox and other companies also market gelatin.

wrinkles and vitamin c

Collagen works synergistically with vitamin C. In other words, if you don’t have enough vitamin C, you can’t absorb collagen very well.(5)Why is vitamin C so important? If you haven’t read our blog The Extremely Odd History of Vitamin C”, read it now! It just seems impossible to have radiant skin without vitamin C. If you’re under stress, drink, smoke, are an athlete, or are fatigued, you may need more vitamin C.(5)Guess that means just about everyone!

Most of the vitamin C you find in stores and online is made from GMO corn and soybeans. (Really???)In fact, a full 90% of the vitamin C sold in the U.S. comes from China.Even the highly advertised“liposomal C” can be made from GMO soy/corn.(4)Ask before you buy. Other sources are “buffered” with salt or calcium making them hard to consume.

In the process of our relentless research developing Limerance Skin Products, we tried dozens of types and makes of vitamin C. Finally, we found a pure non GMO vitamin C from Scotland called Quali-C. To test the purity of any vitamin C, you can put it in a glass of water and wait 25 minutes. Pure pharmaceutical food grade vitamin C should dissolve completely. We are beginning to use this form of vitamin C in Limerance cream and oil formulations. We are very excited about it!!Quali-C is an easy product to take by just mixing with juice. You can find it at: http://www.vitamincascorbicacid.com.

So, here’s my personal beauty and health drink!(As always, check with your health care practitioner first.)I dissolve 6000 mgs of pure vitamin C and serving of collagen in ½ water and ½juice before bed. I also take lysine. It’s easy. It tastes great!

Notes:

  1. If you opt to take vitamin C, experts say copper is also important. Many multivitamins contain copper.

2.We don’t have any financial relationship with collagen manufacturers. We are planning to use Quali-C in our products athttp://www.amazminerals.com
